Germany’s annual CPI declines 0.2 percent in September

Germany's Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reported on Tuesday the country’s consumer price index (CPI) is expected to decrease 0.2 percent m-o-m in September after dropping 0.1 percent m-o-m in the previous month. This represents the largest fall since January 2015.

On the y-o-y basis, Germany’s CPI is also seen to decline 0.2 this month, following a flat performance in August.

Economists had predicted inflation would decrease 0.1 percent both on m-o-m and y-o-y basis in September.

According to the report, food price growth decelerated to 0.6 percent y-o-y in September from 0.7 percent y-o-y in August, while energy prices fell 7.1 percent y-o-y after a 6.3 percent y-o-y drop in the previous month. Services costs rose 1.0 percent y-o-y in September, the same pace as in August.

Meanwhile, the harmonized index of consumer prices for Germany (HICP), which is calculated for European purposes, is expected to fall 0.4 percent m-o-m and 0.4 percent y-o-y.
