U.S. weekly jobless claims total 400,000

The data from the Labor Department showed on Thursday the number of applications for unemployment decreased less than expected last week.

According to the report, the initial claims for unemployment benefits fell by 24,000 to 400,000 for the week ended July 24.

Economists had expected 380,000 new claims last week.

Claims for the prior week were revised upwardly to 424,000 from the initial estimate of 419,000.

Meanwhile, the four-week moving average of jobless claims rose to 394,500 from an upwardly unrevised 386,500 in the previous week.

As for continuing claims, they increased to 3,269,000 from an upwardly revised 3,262,000 in the previous week.
