Global Stocks

European stocks closed slightly lower Monday, pulling back from a one-month high as technology stocks sagged. But U.K. stocks bucked that trend as continued pressure on the pound helped the British blue-chip index outperform its regional rivals.

U.S. stocks finished higher Monday, with the S&P 500 index and Dow industrials closing at records on the back of a rally in telecommunications and technology shares. Wall Street shrugged off news of a terrorism incident in the heart of New York City earlier in the session, which resulted in no fatalities. Investors mostly looked ahead to the Federal Reserve's two-day monetary-policy meeting, which is slated to conclude Wednesday.

Most Asian equities fell as traders await U.S. and European central bank meetings this week for further clues on the 2018 policy outlook. The dollar was steady and oil extended gains around $58 a barrel. Benchmarks in Tokyo sat on recent gains, while Hong Kong and Chinese shares slipped, after U.S. stock indexes hit fresh highs overnight.
