IMF raises 2021 global growth forecast to 5.5 percent from 5.2 percent in October forecast

  • Projects 2022 global growth of 4.1 percent
  • Estimates 2020 global growth contraction at -3.5 percent, 0.9 percentage point higher than projected in its previous forecast 
  • Says renewed waves and new variants of the virus pose "exceptional uncertainty" about the outlook
  • Notes that strength of recovery is seen to vary significantly across countries, depending on access to medical interventions, effectiveness of policy support, exposure to cross-country spillovers, and structural characteristics entering the crisis
  • Forecasts global trade volumes to grow about 8 percent in 2021, before moderating to 6 percent in 2022, following a 9.6 percent decline in 2020 
  • Sees U.S. growth of 5.1 percent in 2021 (up from 3.1 percent seen in October) and 2.5 percent in 2022 (down from 2.9 percent in October)
  • Sees China's growth of 8.1 percent in 2021 (down from 8.2 percent in October) and 5.6 percent in 2022 (up from 5.8 percent in October)."
